Rachel Hershenberg, PhD, ABPP is a board-certified clinical psychologist and Associate Professor in Emory's Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, where she directs psychotherapy services in the Treatment Resistant Depression Program. Dr. Hershenberg brings expertise as both a clinical psychologist and study therapist in interventional psychiatry trials, having provided specialized psychotherapy for patients participating in clinical trials of deep brain stimulation and esketamine and for patients undergoing treatments such as ECT and TMS. She is an expert in helping psychologists navigate and collaborate effectively in the rapidly evolving interventional psychiatry landscape, bridging traditional psychotherapy with innovative psychiatric treatments.

Dr. Hershenberg specializes in depression research and treatment across the severity spectrum, with additional expertise in behavioral activation approaches and ecologically valid research methods. She is author of the self-help book Activating Happiness and has held leadership positions in multiple national organizations (e.g., Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology, APA Division 12 (Society of Clinical Psychology), the American Board of Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology). Dr. Hershenberg has been actively involved in the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration (SEPI) since 2014 and currently serves as Chair of the Education and Training Committee. Her work focuses on integrating evidence-based psychotherapy with neuromodulation interventions and training other clinicians to work effectively in this interdisciplinary space. Increasingly, Dr. Hershenberg is interested in how integrative psychotherapy approaches can help clinicians work more effectively with patients whose difficulties remain despite symptom-focused treatment, including those with chronic, recurrent, or treatment resistant conditions.
